Introduction to IELTS

What is IELTS?

IELTS or International English Language Testing System is a test of English language proficiency. It tests the four areas of English language – listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS examinations are conducted by British Council and IDP and you may take the examination with either British Council or IDP. The tests are the same and examiners and valuation are also the same. There is absolutely no difference between them.

What are General Training and Academic versions?

There are two versions of IELTS tests- Academic and General Training.
Generally, to study or to work in countries like the UK, you need to take the Academic version.

To study below degree level or to migrate, you need the General training version. Make sure which version you need, after consulting your migration agency or the foreign institution beforehand.

When should I register for examination?

DO NOT register yourself. After assessing your skills through tests, we will register you. However, as seats are limited, we need to register you at least two months before the examination date.
To take the IELTS examination, you will need a valid passport and you must have it with you at the time of examination.
Without a passport, you will not be able to take the test.

When do I get the results?

Results will be made available 13 days after the test. On the 13th day, the results will be published on the British Council web site and the TRF (Test Report Form) with the scores will reach candidates in another three to four days by mail or courier.

What is the validity of the IELTS certificate?

The IELTS results are valid for a period of two years from the date of the examination.

The IETLS Test

The IELTS examination has 4 separate tests – Listening Test, Reading Test, Writing Test and Speaking Test.

Listening Test – 30 minutes
The first test is the Listening Test. It is for 30 minutes. You will listen to audio played and write answers.

Reading Test – 1 hour

The next test is Reading test. There is no break. It is for one hour. You will write answers after reading passages.
Reading Test materials are different for Academic and General Training modules.

Writing Test – 1 hour

Writing test is different for Academic and General Training.
In the Academic module, you must write about a graph. Next, you must write an essay.
In General Training, you need to write a letter and an essay.

Speaking Test – 12 – 14 minutes
This is an interview between one candidate and one examiner.

Listening Test

The listening Test is for 30 minutes. It will have 4 sections and 40 questions.

– You must write your answers as you listen. The audio will be played only once.

– In the test, use only pencil .

– In the examination, you write on the question booklet, and then you get 10 minutes to transfer the answers to an Answer Sheet.

How to calculate your score: (approximate only)

Writing answers in Listening Test

Capital letters:
You can write in small or capital letters. If you wish, you may write everything in capitals.
Example: rabbit meat / Rabbit Meat / RABBIT MEAT. <-- All are accepted.

Money/ Numbers:
You can use currency symbols or write currency name.
$= dollar; ₤ = pound € = euro

Numbers can be written in figures or words.
Example: $ 200 / 200 dollars / two hundred dollars

If you are not sure about the symbol, write in words: pound/ dollar/ euro etc.
But 200 dollar X 200 dollars

Now, do the listening test in your practice book.

Introduction to GT Reading Test

What is in the Reading Test?

The Test is for 1 hour.
It will have 3 SECTIONS.
There will be a total of 40 questions.

What will the test contain?
The test has three sections as shown below

Section 1 Contains two or three short factual texts, related to everyday life, e.g. hotel advertisements. Brochures, transportation information.

Section 2 Contains two short factual texts related to work, e.g. applying for a job, company policies, pay and conditions, workplace facilities, staff development and training.

Section 3 Contains on long passage on a topic of general interest, e.g. newspaper / magazine articles, book extracts on environment, business, people weather etc.

How the score is calculated: (approximate)

Strategies for Reading:

You need to answer 40 questions in one hour and this means you have 1 ½ minute for a question. So, you don’t have the time to read the whole text and answer the questions. What you can do is first skim the text and then start with the question.

What is skimming?
Skimming is something you do at the very beginning of the test to get an overall idea of the text.

What to do: For skimming, read the main headings and sub headings if any.
Also, run your eye through the text very fast. This is reading very fast. Sometimes you
read half the sentence or sometimes a few words.
Time: Take only 1 to 1 ½ minutes for skimming.

When you read the question, focus on the key words. This would help you
understand what kind answer is expected. Also, it helps you search for the answer.

Focusing on Key words:

Below key words in the questions are highlighted. Decide what types of answers are suitable for the following questions.

1. In which town is the library? (Example) a. place b. a number c. persons d. a day
2. What is the post code of the library? a. place b. a number c. persons d. a day
3. On which day is the library open the latest? a. place b. a number c. persons d. a day
4. Who has free parking facilities near the library? a. place b. a number c. persons d. a day

Answers: 1. a. 2. b. 3. d 4. c

Here, you will be asked to complete sentences with up to three words from the passage.

For the past few days some repair work has been going on in my bathroom and the noise was from this work. The bathroom has some serious plumbing problem and the pipes had to be replaced. That part is over and the workers, at present, are fixing new tiles in the bathroom. The noise was from the tile cutting machine.

I have made sure that this will not trouble you again. The workmen will do the tile cutting in their work shop. Also, I have sealed windows and doors so that the noise would not escape. I am sure this should solve the problem. The work will be over in another two days.
Once again sorry for all the trouble this has caused you.

I am very sorry we have to drop our plans. I know you have made all arrangements for my visit and they have to be cancelled now. Everything was so unexpected.

But can I suggest an alternate date? Will it be alright if I came in July? I can make myself free then and would like to make the trip if it is fine with you all. Please let me know.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing in response to your advertisement in the Daily Mirror for a skiing course.

I am from a tropical country and have no experience with snow. May be that is why I am so fascinated by skiing on snow. I have seen the sport on television and would very much like to join the course.

However, I have one or two problems. Firstly, I do not have my own skis and don’t wish to purchase them since I will be here only for three weeks. Is it possible for me to hire skis and other equipment for the duration of the course? Also, I wear glasses all the time. Will that be a problem since all are required to wear goggles while skiing?

I’m afraid that I have to be back in India by 31st January so I may not be able to stay for the whole four weeks. I would like to know if it is possible to have a refund if I leave two weeks before the end of the course.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am a resident of the Palm Beach Street and am writing this letter to draw your attention to a car lying abandoned in our area.

About seven weeks ago someone left this car on our street opposite to the Little Flower Nursery and has been lying there ever since. It is a 1970 Toyota coupe, blue in colour with flat tyres. The front wind shield is broken and the car has no license plates. `

This car is causing serious problems to the people in this area, both pedestrians and drivers. The road here is not very wide and naturally, it makes it very difficult for the drivers. Besides, it is a very ugly sight and at times children can be seen playing inside the car.

I phoned your office two weeks back about this problem but unfortunately, no action has been taken so far. I request you to have the car taken away without further delay. Also, I feel the real owner of the car should be traced and punished for this irresponsible act.

In particular, I want to sell my big dining table. Do you remember it – the one in the living room? It has wooden frame and a grey glass top and it’s big enough for six people. There are six matching chairs to go with it.

I know you always liked this piece of furniture, so I could let you have it for a bargain*. I too love this piece and I’d rather sell to you than to a stranger!

Why don’t you come around and take another look at them on Saturday? We’ll be here all day, so maybe, we could have lunch together.

Give me a ring and let me know.

You were hurt in a minor accident inside a supermarket, and you wish to complain to the supermarket.

– give details about the accident
– suggest how the supermarket could prevent similar incidents.

Write at least 150 words

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,

Model answer:

Dear sir/ madam,

I am a regular customer of your supermarket and I am writing this letter to inform you about an accident inside your store in which I got slightly hurt.

It happened yesterday at about 5 pm. on the steps leading to the restrooms on the ground floor. The stairwell is usually poorly lit and yesterday there were no lights at all. In addition, one or two steps are broken at the edges. While going down I lost balance and fell. I hit my right elbow on the floor and got bruised. Luckily there was no serious injury. Hearing me fall some of your staff came running and helped me up.

It is very unfortunate that such an incident happened. It could have been more serious. I suggest that you immediately get the lights repaired in the stairwell and also mend the steps. If possible, it would be a good idea to build restrooms on each floor so that customers need not go to the ground floor to use them.

I hope you will look into this and do the needful at the earliest.

He is coming with his family and it is his first time to the UK and he has asked me to meet him at the airport. He will need some help with clearing his luggage and other things and I will have to drop them at their hotel.

I know how disappointed you will be. Now, if you wish you can go ahead without me. Or, better still, we could sell our tickets for this Saturday and go the next Saturday. The same play is playing next week also. Let me know what you think.

Bye for now. Once again, sorry for upsetting your plan. I will definitely make it up to you next time.

I hope this does not cause much inconvenience.

If you need to contact me during my holiday, I’ll be staying at the Imperial Hotel in Petersburg. If it’s urgent, however, please ring my mobile phone. I’ve written the numbers on a sticky note which I’ve left on the fridge.

There are a few things I would like you to take care of. My cat needs to be fed twice daily; so each morning and evening put a handful of cat biscuits in his dish. You will find these in the kitchen pantry. You can give him a small bowl of milk in the evening.

I would like you to water my plants, too. The indoor ones in the lounge only need water once every few days but the plants on the balcony need to be watered daily. Finally, for security, could you clear my mail box every day and keep the outside lights on at night?

Once again thanks for the help. I look forward to seeing you on my return.

Dear Sir/ madam,

I am a resident of Burnsville and I am writing to bring to your attention some issues with the local train service.

I take the 8 am train from Manchester to Liverpool every morning. For the past few days the train has been arriving at least 10 minutes late each day. Moreover, it is really difficult to find a seat due to overcrowding.

Most passengers have the same complaint and are becoming increasingly frustrated. The delay in the train arrival is making us late for work and overcrowding means many of us are forced to stand for the duration of the journey. This is extremely uncomfortable.

I would like to suggest that you run more trains on this route during the peak hours. Another solution would be to add an extra carriage to trains to provide more space.

I hope you will address these concerns as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

However, on their arrival I found out that there were only 2 pairs of socks. In addition, there were scratches on the boots that suggest that they had been used before and returned to your store.

I am hereby returning the packages to your office. I have read the refund policy, and as I am dissatisfied with the product, I would like to request a full refund, as well as the postal and packaging fees. Should you have any questions, you can contact me via email, my address is

You should write at least 150 words.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to complain about my suitcase that was damaged while travelling in one of your long distance buses.
The trip was made on January 26, 2010 and I travelled from London to Manchester on your Skyline Express. (I am enclosing a photocopy of my ticket for your reference.) I had 2 suitcases with me and they were handed over to your booking clerk at the beginning of the journey.

On arriving in Manchester, I found that one of the suitcases was damaged. It was a Samsonite Travelite case, red in colour with four wheels. Its handle was broken and one side had a sharp dent in it. I reported the matter to your office but have not received feed back so far.

I understand that, as per rules, your company is liable to pay for any damage to passenger’s luggage that occurs during travel. My suitcase was a brand new one costing $125. Since it is beyond repair, I request that your company pay for a new suitcase.

I await your reply at the earliest.

I hope to hear favourably from you soon.

Dear Mr………..,

Model answer:

Dear Dr. Simpson,

I am writing to request a two weeks’ leave from my studies starting 2nd August till 17th August. This is because I need to return home to attend an important family function.

My sister is getting married next month and would like to be home for it. This is the first wedding in my family and she is my only sister. Also, since I’m the only son to my parents, they want me there as a wedding in the family can be a stressful time with so many arrangements to be made.

I assure you that this will not affect my studies in any way. I have submitted all the projects of last semester and those of this semester are due only in November. I promise to work hard and make up for the days I will miss the class.
I hope to receive a favourable response from you.

Yours sincerely,

Dear ………..,

Dear Bob,

We had a fine journey back home and reached here yesterday by 5 in the evening.

I am writing to thank you for the wonderful time we had with you. We really enjoyed the stay at your seaside villa. It was a very refreshing and relaxing week. Indeed, it was a pleasure to meet you after all these years and talk about old times.

We all really loved the picnic on the beach. And the swim in the sea! It really brought back memories of our childhood. Also, I enjoyed very much the games of cards and badminton at your local club. Again, the barbeque we had on the lawn at night under the stars was really something!

I think we should meet more often and now it is your turn to visit us here. You must come with Clare and children and spend a week here. And the best time to do so would be in December. Let me know when you are free and we’ll make all the arrangements.
Once again, thanks for the wonderful time.

Bye for now.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that today I received a letter from your bank asking me to acknowledge the receipt of my new bank card. However, when I opened it I did not find any card in the envelope. It contained only the letter.

I feel this is a serious matter and your office should look into the matter most urgently. I am very concerned that the card is missing. There is always the possibility that the card is stolen and in such a case, it can be misused. It may be used to take out money from my account or to purchase goods on credit.

I would like to know what action you will take in this regard. Is it possible to trace the missing card? At the same time, could you cancel the card immediately and issue a new one? Also, will you send the new card this time through a more reliable agency?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Dear ………..,

Dear Matt,
How are things with you? I hope you had a safe journey back home and everything is fine.

I’m writing about this book (Fundamentals of Molecular Biology) I borrowed from you just before our final examinations. Yesterday I found it among my books. I am very sorry I forgot to return it before you left. It was very careless of me.

Now, I would like to send the book to you. But, let me know how important this book is. Let me know if you need the book right away. Have you joined any course for which you need the book? Or, can it wait?

If you need it immediately, I will send it by express mail. It should reach you within a week’s time. But if it can wait for some more time, shall I send it by ordinary mail? Let me know what I should do.

Enjoy your holidays.
Best regards,

You have a full time job and are also doing a part-time evening course. You now find that you
cannot continue the course. Write a letter to the course tutor. In your letter:

– describe the situation,
– explain why you cannot continue at this time,
– say what action you would like to take.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Mr. ………………..

Dear Mr. Anderson,

I am a student doing the Computer Hardware course (evening batch) at your institute. I am writing to let you know that I wish to temporarily discontinue the course.

Currently, I am working full time as a sales assistant at a major supermarket with duty hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. By the time I finish work it is 7.30 p.m. Then I rush to your class which is for another one and half hours. Usually, by the time I reach home, it is 10.30 pm.

I wish to discontinue the course since the work at the supermarket is quite tiring and I find it difficult to pay proper attention to my class. I am particularly finding it hard to do projects which are part of the course.

I am trying to change my job and get a position where the working hours will be shorter. As soon as I get my new job, I would like to resume the course; but till that time I wish to discontinue it.

I hope you understand my situation and will allow me to break my course.

Yours sincerely,
Jon Andrews
